Do you want to keep your plants looking good throughout the rest of the summer but not sure how with the crazy weather we have been having? From one extreme to another, it goes from being rainy for a period of time and then sunny and hot. Here are some helpful tips to care for your plants throughout a rollercoaster of a season.
Fertilize- Heavy rains can wash away nutrients. We fertilize regularly at Mill Creek, using Jack’s All Purpose fertilizer. For stunning plants all summer long, we suggest fertilizing weekly. Jack’s fertilizer can be used on indoor and outdoor plants. It provides the perfect ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium your plants need for growing healthy roots and luscious flowers.
Check your watering- Let your plants dry out to avoid root rot during the rainy times. Check for moisture at least one inch down in the soil and if it is dry, then give your plants some water. On the other hand, if your plant has crisp leaves, that could be a sign it may need water. Keep in mind that you may need to water more often if we have many hot, sunny days in a row.
Aerate the soil- Breaking up the soil or loosening the soil can help with drainage.
Check drainage holes- Make sure you have adequate drainage holes in pots to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
Prune and clean- Prune any dead, dying, or overgrown branches to improve air circulation and reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Clean out dead leaves and debris from pots, as they can harbor pests and diseases.
Stake or support plants where needed. Plants can become weakened with too much water. Less sun can also make new growth floppy. Staking plants can keep them supported and able to grow healthy.
Mill Creek has the tools you need for keeping your plants looking good throughout the rest of the season. We have pruners, fertilizer, and more. We also still have some annuals to refresh your containers if needed. Stop by to check out what we have!
